The Huskers may have had their best all around game so far as they toppled Maple Lake 20-15 Friday night.
The defense prevented consistent scoring drives. The offense line enabled Holdingford to move the ball on the ground and in the air. The team also completed drives with touchdowns by Griffin Olson (34-124) and Evan DeMorret (9-29). DeMorett (10/17-243 1 int) also threw for a touchdown.
"The line played well and we were really balanced," said head coach Luke Mitchell. "We had about 200 yards rushing and Evan threw for over 240 yards."
Others carrying the ball for the Huskers were Grant Helmin (4-33) and Jordan Brown (4-17). Mitchell noted an advantage of having a number of people who can carry the ball.
"Griffin is having a nice year, but teams are keying on him," said Mitchell.
The pass blocking enables DeMorett to spot his receivers and he did. Isaiah Folsom (2-79) and Olson (3-73) both had big gains after receptions Olson also had a touchdown reception in the game. Tyson Patrick (2-42), Adam Ripplinger (1-23) and Nick Hellmann (1-15) were also targets for DeMorett.
Holdingford took the lead in the second half of the game. They sealed the win with combination of offense and defense late in the game.
In the final quarter the Huskers had a seven minute drive stalled, but there were only 15 seconds left in the game. Patrick assured the Huskers they would win with an interception.
Holdingford next faces Rockford on Friday night at homecoming. Rockford is coming off a 40-7 loss to Melrose.
