Huskers split doubleheader against Paynesville

The Holdingford Huskers took the first game of a doubleheader against host Paynesville 7-1 in Central Minnesota Conference action April 25 at Paynesville High School in Paynesville.
Holdingford led 2-1 at the end of the second inning, then scored one more in the third, three in the sixth and one in the seventh.
Opatz pitched a complete game, giving up six hits and one unearned run. She struck out three and walked two.
Soltis (double) and Young (home run) got two hits, while Claire Christen Annaliese Odden, Emily Fiedler and Hailey Kotzer got a hit each.
Young, Fiedler and Kotzer were credited with an RBI each.
Paynesville 19, Holdingford 14
The Huskers did not fare as well in the second game, giving up 19 runs.
While Holdingford outhit the Bulldogs 15-8, its eight errors and 18 walks proved costly in the 19-14 defeat.
Fielder (double) led Holdingford with three hits. Getting two each were Soltis, Young, Christen and Kotzer as Makadence Gallus, Odden, Annaliese Volkers and Ella Bensen got a hit each.
The first inning alone was quite a slugfest, with Paynesville scoring eight runs and Holdingford answering with four.
Holdingford too a 9-8 lead at the end of the second inning, but after five funs in the third, Paynesville never trailed.
Holdigford 14, Upsala 3
The Huskers won the first of two games on the day April 24, defeating Upsala 14-3 at Swanville High School in Swanville.
Holdingford pounded out four runs in the first, five in the second and another four in the third to take a 13-3 advantage in the five-inning game.
Opatz struck out four in those five innings and did not walk a batter.
Soltis and Gallus (double) got a pair of hits each, with Young (home run), Odden, Danica Brissett and Bensen getting a hit each. Young was the RBI leader with four, with Gallus getting three.
Swanville 10, Holdingford 9
The Huskers had a tough loss against Swanville in the second game of the day, as the Bulldogs broke a 9-9 tie with a walk-off run in the seventh.
Opatz pitched three innings, giving up three runs, and Bensen went four innings, yielding seven runs (four earned).
Soltis, Gallus and Young combined for five RBIs.
